Robert Amundsen is a missionary of the General Board of Global Ministries assigned to the Red Bird Missionary Conference where he serves as pastor of the United Methodist Church in Thousandsticks, Kentucky. Robert moved to that appointment in December 2008.

Prior to that Robert  served as a Pastor in Harlan County, KY. He was first appointed to Evarts & Congregational UMCs; in 2001 the two churches joined together, due to a flood project, to become the Evarts Congregational UMC. In June, 2007, Robert started serving the Wallins UMC.

Robert was born in Watervliet, MI and raised in Mountain City, TN. He has also lived in California and Missouri. He came to Red Bird from the Holston Conference. Robert graduated from Milligan College in 1992. While at Red Bird Mission, he taught and coached at Red Bird School, worked as a summer crew leader for the Red Bird Mission Work Camp for two years and served as a member of the Fire Department. Prior to coming to Red Bird, Robert was active in his home church, Shouns UMC, where he served is several capacities.
Robert was a member of a mission team from Holston Conference that went to Liberia, West Africa in 1995. He is a 2006 graduate of the Advanced Course of Study through Candler School of Theology in Atlanta, GA. Prior to his call to full-time ministry, Robert was a Lay speaker in both the Holston and Red Bird Conferences and attended the Walk to Emmaus. After meeting Shirley, Robert became an active part at the Joy Center, where he taught the High School Boys Sunday School class until time of his appointment. Robert was co-director of the Middle School age camp at Camp O’Cumberlands with Shirley. During Robert’s appointment to Harlan County, he was also Adjunct Faculty at Southeast Kentucky Community & Technical College (Harlan Campus), where he taught Comparative Religion, Personal Finance, and Workplace Principles.
Shirley is from Manchester, KY. She graduated from Union College in 1990. During Robert’s appointment in Harlan County, Shirley led the children’s ministries at Evarts Congregational UMC and children’s church at Wallins UMC. Shirley was the President of the UMW, president of the local Homemakers association, and cooked at Christ’s Hand, a soup kitchen in Harlan. Shirley is now getting adjusted to life in Thousandsticks and is one of the Adult leaders in the Kids for Christ (KFC) ministry.
Robert and Shirley were married December, 1996 at the Joy Center. They have one son, Jordyn McKinlee, who was born in 2001. Jordyn is a wonder and a joy for the family. Jordyn recently completed Kindergarten and will be going into 2ndGrade. Jordyn enjoys trains, baseball, reading, and NASCAR. His biggest joy is that he just graduated to a big boy bike with a kickstand and no training wheels.
Robert, Shirley, and Jordyn are excited about their new appointment at Thousandsticks UMC in Leslie County.  They are looking forward to the new opportunities God brings each day through sharing the Gospel. “We want to Build a fire in the lives of others and give attention to those who are seeking and lost,” Robert says. “We seek to love all as Christ has loved us.”
